Knowing which bit of kit is best depends on how you want to use Skype. Some of
you will be in your office at your computer, others in the garden. Different
needs demand different solutions.
We have broken this buyers guide down into 2 sections:
Quick start Guide
Where will you use Skype (ideally)?
•
At my computer only
•
On my laptop in the office and on the move
•
At home – but away from the computer
Common Skype Scenarios
Need an extra line…
Improve audio experience…
Solve plug switching…
Home office…
Extra Line
My teenage son uses the phone almost constantly in the evenings. We get a good
deal from BT so the costs are very reasonable. But it does means that the rest
of the family miss calls and my daughter is starting to call her friends too.
I don’t want to add another line from BT. Any ideas?
We suggest…
Just about any of our products! One of the USB phones can sit next to your computer
and this can act as a second line, allowing both in and out calls via Skype.
The great thing about the USB phones is that they ring just like a normal phone
making it much easier for non-computer literate family members to answer and
use the phone.
Better quality
We are using Skype on my laptop at home but the people on the other end complain
that we sound distant and unclear (in a bucket were their exact words). Can we
improve this?
We suggest:
A pair of Plantronics headphones with a boom microphone will improve both what
you hear and how you sound to other people. However, if you have the headphones
plugged in you might not hear incoming calls. An alternative is a neat Yamamoto
USB Handset. These look and feel like a mobile phone and they ring when you get
a call from Skype. They are also very portable, so you can carry them in your
laptop bag.
More plugs?
We use want to use Skype on our home computer that is upstairs. We like using
headphones and a boom microphone as you get excellent quality and privacy. The
problem is we can’t hear when someone calls us. At the moment we swap the
headphones and speakers over but its not ideal. We need some kind of switch type
thing. Got one?
We suggest:
Plantronics make a switch that will solve your problem. It allows headphones
with microphone and speakers to all be plugged in at once. There is then a single
switch on top to jump between the two. So when you hear a call you can just switch
to the headphones and off you go. Just remember to switch it back to the speakers
when you leave!
Home office
We run a business from home and use the phone a lot. We have heard Skype can
reduce our call costs and give us an extra line. The two of us in the office
need to be able to hear it ring and we would like to be able to have a speaker
on it so we can both listen and talk on important calls.
We suggest:
The Yamamoto USB Desk Phone sounds ideal for you. It’s a fully functional
desk phone with hands free and speakerphone operations. Alternatively, if you
have an unused phone you could look at the Actiontec Internet Phone Wizard. This
allows you to connect a regular phone to your computer and make/receive calls
via Skype.
